Stroud Wedding Photographer covering Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds

I’m a natural, emotive wedding photographer based in Stroud, Gloucestershire, with 13 years of experience shooting weddings across the Cotswolds and beyond. My style sits between documentary and artistic — relaxed, natural, and led by real moments and beautiful light. Most of your day is captured candidly, with me working quietly in the background so you can enjoy it without feeling like you’re on a photoshoot. For couple portraits, I keep things quick, fun and relaxed — even if you’re camera shy, I’ll make it enjoyable and the results will look natural, not forced. My photographs are vibrant, joyful, and full of warmth — sharp, rich in detail, and they look stunning on a wall as well as on a screen.

Being a local Stroud wedding photographer means I know this area inside out — the lanes, the light, the hidden spots where the valley opens up and gives you something extraordinary to work with. That local knowledge is a genuine advantage. While a photographer travelling from elsewhere will shoot at your venue and leave, I can take you five minutes down the road to a viewpoint, a hidden lane or a quiet stretch of Cotswold stone wall that most people would never find.

Flexible, Local Coverage — Including Last-Minute Bookings

One of the practical benefits of booking a local wedding photographer is flexibility. Because I’m based in Stroud, I can sometimes offer shorter minimum bookings, customised coverage to suit your actual plans, and I genuinely welcome last-minute enquiries. If your wedding is days or weeks away rather than months, that’s not a problem — we put together a package that works for your day without the logistical complications of booking someone from further afield.

Planning a wedding involves a lot of meetings — dress fittings, food tastings, venue visits, floristry consultations. When your key suppliers are local, that process becomes significantly easier and less stressful. No long drives or relying on video calls when you’d rather meet face to face. Booking local suppliers in and around Stroud makes the whole planning experience more manageable, and I’d always encourage couples to explore what this area has to offer before looking further afield.

Stroud Register Office Wedding Photography

Stroud Register Office — officially called Stroud Register Office, though most people search for Stroud Registry Office — is housed in The Old Victorian School on Parliament Street. It’s a charming Cotswold stone building with a ceremony room that holds up to 56 guests, full of original Victorian character. I’ve photographed many weddings here over the years and know the space well.

Many couples choose Stroud Register Office for their legal ceremony and then head to a reception venue nearby. It’s a format that works really well — you get an intimate, meaningful ceremony with your closest people, then open things up for a bigger celebration afterwards. The register office is only a short drive from some beautiful Cotswold countryside and several excellent reception venues, which means you can build in a quick stop for couple portraits on the way to the party. I know exactly where to take you for the best light and backdrops depending on the time of year and time of day.

Couple Portraits in the Stroud Countryside

This is where being a Stroud-based photographer makes the biggest difference. The countryside surrounding Stroud is some of the most photogenic in the Cotswolds — rolling valleys, ancient woodland, Cotswold stone villages, picturesque lanes and commons with panoramic views stretching for miles. I know where to find the best light at different times of day and different seasons, and I can build these into your wedding timeline without eating into your celebrations.

Rodborough Common and Minchinhampton Common are two of my favourite locations for couple portraits. Both are open National Trust grassland sitting high above the Stroud valleys with uninterrupted views across the Cotswold landscape. On a summer evening the light here is extraordinary — golden and warm, with nothing between you and the horizon. In autumn, the surrounding woodland turns spectacular colours. Even in winter, with frost on the grass and mist in the valleys, the commons offer something dramatic and atmospheric.

These aren’t locations you’ll find on a generic Cotswolds photography guide. They’re places I walk regularly, where I know the angles and the light because I live here. That familiarity means I can get you stunning portraits in a short time and have you back with your guests before anyone notices you’ve gone.

Celebrant Ceremonies and Church Weddings in Stroud

Many couples getting married in the Stroud area choose a celebrant-led ceremony — either as a standalone celebration or alongside a legal ceremony at the register office. The flexibility of a celebrant ceremony means you can marry outdoors in a private garden, in a marquee on a family farm, or in any setting that feels meaningful to you. Stroud has some excellent local celebrants who specialise in crafting personal, heartfelt ceremonies, and I’ve worked alongside several of them many times. If your are planning an alternative wedding, I’d love to hear from you!

For couples choosing a church wedding, the villages around Stroud offer some beautiful settings. The Cotswold stone churches in this area — with their lychgates, yew-lined paths and ancient graveyards — provide a timeless backdrop regardless of the season.

Marquee Weddings Near Stroud

A marquee wedding in the Stroud valleys gives you complete creative freedom — your own venue, your own caterers, your own timeline. Whether it’s a formal seated dinner with hanging floral installations or a relaxed festival-style party with DIY bunting and hay bales, a marquee lets you build exactly the wedding you want. The countryside around Stroud provides stunning settings for marquee weddings, with valley views and rolling hills right outside the tent.

I’ve photographed marquee weddings throughout the Stroud area and I understand how the light works in these spaces — the way canvas diffuses afternoon sun, how fairy lights and candles transform the atmosphere as evening arrives, and where to position myself during speeches and first dances to catch the best moments without getting in the way.

The Bear of Rodborough Hotel

The Bear of Rodborough is a 17th-century coaching inn perched on top of Rodborough Common, just minutes from Stroud town centre. It’s one of my nearest wedding venues and one I know it well. The hotel has real character — original stone archways, log fires, Arts and Crafts-inspired interiors — and can host weddings for up to 100 guests with 44 bedrooms for overnight stays.

What makes The Bear special from a photography perspective is the common itself. Step outside the hotel and you’re on open National Trust grassland with sweeping views across the Cotswold countryside. The free-roaming cows that graze the common have been known to photobomb more than one wedding portrait. I always recommend couples make time for some photos on the common — the images you get are worth it.  The Bear is part of the Cotswolds Inns and Hotels group, and I’ve also photographed weddings at its sister hotel, the Hare and Hounds in Tetbury.

The Old Lodge, Minchinhampton

The Old Lodge is a 400-year-old former hunting lodge set in the heart of Minchinhampton Common, with panoramic views across the Stroud valleys. Licensed for ceremonies of up to 100 guests, it offers three ceremony spaces including an outdoor pagoda — perfect for couples who want their whole day in one location. The common surrounding the venue is ideal for couple portraits, particularly at golden hour when the light across the valleys is exceptional.

I’ve photographed many weddings at The Old Lodge and it’s a venue where being local really pays off. I know the common and nearby scenic spots well — which direction to walk for the best light, where the views open up, and how to use the ancient stone building itself as a backdrop. The combination of the historic venue and wide-open common gives a wonderful mix of intimate interior moments and dramatic landscape portraits.

The Painswick

The Painswick is a boutique hotel in the village of Painswick, sometimes called the Queen of the Cotswolds, just a few miles from Stroud. It’s a real gem! With its honey-coloured Cotswold stone, sweeping valley views and beautifully landscaped grounds, it’s one of the most photogenic wedding venues in the area. I’ve photographed numerous weddings here and absolutely love it.

Burleigh Court Hotel

Burleigh Court Hotel is a boutique manor house hotel set in four acres of mature gardens at Brimscombe, just five minutes from Stroud. It’s an intimate venue — specialising in elopements, micro weddings and smaller celebrations for up to 56 guests — with a two-rosette restaurant using locally sourced seasonal produce. The 200-year-old country house has beautiful period features, a Mediterranean-inspired terrace garden, and views over the Golden Valley. The terraced gardens and the spectacular copper beech tree on the grounds provide gorgeous natural backdrops.

Stonehouse Court Hotel

Stonehouse Court Hotel is a Grade II-listed 17th-century manor house set in six acres of grounds on the edge of Stroud, overlooking the Stroud Water Canal and the rolling hills of the Stroud Valley. It’s a versatile venue catering for everything from intimate ceremonies to large exclusive-use weddings of up to 150 guests, with 36 bedrooms and the option for marquees on the lawns. The grounds include a stone pagoda for outdoor ceremonies and a gateway leading directly to the canal towpath.

The combination of the historic manor house, landscaped gardens, canal and surrounding countryside gives real variety for wedding photography — formal portraits against the stone façade, relaxed walks along the water, and landscape shots with the church reflected in the canal.

Local and Sustainable Weddings in Stroud

Stroud has a strong community of independent businesses, makers and growers, and that extends to the wedding industry. Many couples getting married here actively choose to work with local suppliers — not just because it’s more practical, but because it aligns with their values. Choosing a local florist who grows their own flowers, a caterer who sources ingredients from nearby farms, or a brewery just down the road for your reception drinks means your wedding supports the local economy and reduces unnecessary travel and environmental impact.

This isn’t about making sustainability the centrepiece of your wedding — it’s simply a natural benefit of the extraordinary range of talented suppliers working in and around Stroud. From award-winning locally grown sparkling wine to artisan ice cream made on Rodborough Common, from organic beer brewed beside the canal to carbon-negative diamonds made in the Cotswold hills, the options here are genuinely remarkable. You can have a beautiful, personal wedding while knowing that your choices support the community and landscape you’re celebrating in.

Saltbox & Co — A flower farm in the Slad Valley near Stroud, growing and hand-cutting their own flowers for weddings and seasonal bouquets. Home-grown, seasonal and about as local as it gets. Their arrangements have a beautifully natural, just-picked quality that suits Cotswold weddings perfectly. “Imperfectly perfect, quirky and wild”, as they describe them. A mother and daughter team who love what they do.

The Unwalled Garden — A creative floral studio in the Cotswolds with their own flower farm, specialising in luxury sustainable wedding flowers. Demelza’s designs are nature-led and seasonal, using locally grown blooms wherever possible — a genuine farm-to-vase approach to stunning wedding floristry.

Now in their fourth generation, Winstones offer wedding ice cream vans serving their handcrafted flavours — a genuine crowd-pleaser and about as local as a wedding treat can be. Made from the milk of cows grazing the same common where you might be having your wedding portraits taken.

Wedding Celebrants

Ceremony by Design — Jacqui Harding is an independent, fully qualified celebrant based in Stroud. She writes every ceremony from scratch — no templates — and her ceremonies are warm, personal and often very funny. I’ve worked alongside Jacqui at many weddings and she consistently delivers something that feels genuinely meaningful. Specialises in weddings, vow renewals and handfasting ceremonies across Gloucestershire.

The Tall Trees Celebrant — Stroud-based wedding celebrant creating bespoke, personal ceremonies for couples in the Cotswolds and Gloucestershire. Another local celebrant I’ve enjoyed collaborating with at weddings in the area.

Wedding Transport

Uley Wedding Cars — Local wedding car hire near Stroud, providing reliable transport for couples and guests on the day. Based in the Stroud area, they know all the local venues and routes well, a real advantage on narrow and difficult roads around Stroud!

Wedding Rings and Jewellery

Skydiamond — The world’s first carbon-negative diamonds, made at their Sky Lab near Stroud in the Cotswolds. Skydiamond captures CO2 from the atmosphere and uses renewable energy to create lab-grown diamonds that are chemically identical to mined stones. The entire process — from harvesting rainwater and atmospheric carbon to cutting and setting the finished jewellery — happens in Gloucestershire. For couples who care about sustainability, a Skydiamond wedding ring is genuinely extraordinary: a diamond made from the Cotswold sky, verified carbon-negative by Imperial College London, and crafted by local artisans. They offer bespoke engagement and wedding ring design from their Cotswolds showroom.
